Trainer Pants Tute!

  • Oct. 8th, 2007 at 12:14 PM

 Sorry it took me forever!

Here is the tutorial on how to make lycra winged trainer pants which can also be used as pocket nappies / diapers.

You materials will depend on their purpose.

What fabrics can I use?
 TrainersNappies
Inner Layer
Sherpa
Flannelette
Cotton Knit
Velour
Bamboo

Suedecloth
Microfleece
Minkee
Velour
Outer LayerCotton of any kind
Minkee
Poly Prints
or PUL for extra
assurance
PUL
Water Resistant Fleece

Once you have your fabrics, you will need braided elastic or lastin and lycra for the wings.  One 10cm width of lycra (150cm long) costs around $3 and stretches to 3-4 nappies.

First cut out the pattern shape on both your outer and inner layers.

This one is a Small-Medium (for around 12-18 months).  It is 36cm (14") in length and 16cm (6") in width.  Be sure to make the back slightly longer so we can fold the elastic under.

Zig zag the stretched elastic along the back edge.

Fold it over and straight stitch it down, stretching as you go.

Repeat with your inner layer.

Fold your first rectangle of lycra good side in and sticth the sides together.  Repeat with your second rectangle.  (Mine are 10cm (4") by 20cm (8"). )

Poke them out the right way round.

Lay these on the outer layer, yucky edge aligned with the edge of the nappy.

Pop the inner layer on top.  So you'll see that both layers are good sides together with little lycra arms trapped inside.

Sew right around the edges, leaving the back pocket open.  Be sure to trap the lycra in your stitches.

Sew elastic on the leg area and the underbelly, zigzagging and stretching as you go.

Trim off any extra fabric and you'll have a one-of-these:

Flip it inside out, and pop snaps on the 2 corners of each wing, the on the 2 matching edges of your diaper and there you go!

All done!

You can stuff these with any absorbent fabric, cotton, microfibre, hemp, bamboo etc.

An extra bonus is that you get 3-4 of these from a standard nappy cut, making them very economical.

Hope that makes sense!  Feel free to ask me to clarify anything.  :)

I made this one out of bamboo velour and a poly PUL.

I got my PUL from http://www.diapercuts.com/

A big thank you to Leanne at The Nappy Network for the inspiration.  :)

Argh! I just bought a couple rather expensive HH stuffable trainers that don't look near as nice as these! Not that we seem to really need this sort of thing as there aren't too many accidents, but they look much more comfy than the commercial styles and would come in handy...hmmm...can you post the link to the pattern?

Yeah, toilet training full steam ahead (day only of course) for the last month and very successfully too! It's very exciting not to be washing many nappies :) I got the training pants from Snazzipants and I tell you what, that was the only thing that saved me going in to that store, that Hazel wouldn't wear any of it :D Did you base the pattern on anything in particular or just wing it?

And you know how I keep saying we need to make a booking for another set of photos? Well I do mean it and we've decided we need to soon so what's the best way to arrange it? I just printed off some of the ones you did last year to add to a photo wall I'm doing in my 'office' and oh wowee are they so lovely! Need more!

You Rock
Lou, you rock. I'm glad I found your blog ;0) I might have to make some of these up for the Izzy monster who is almost but not quite fully night trained :) I guess that would be when I can work my way from under all this tulle.

Training Pants
These are brilliant...wow! I can't sew, won't sew, but sure wish I could. Well done, you! If you can make them quickly (easy) enough, I bet there would be a huge market for them. Lishelle :0)

Thank you
Hi, I was wondering if you had managed to work out some more measurements for bigger kids? Or is it just trial and error. I love this idea.
